I had a collection of scripts, cron jobs and other utils that were sort of thrown in a pot and left to simmer.

Often, when I was not paying attention they would boil over leaving a sludge on my desktop... It was time to tidy things up and hopefully provide a tool that other people can use as well.

Also, I have been using Xplanet for several years and belive in the unix ideals of building on and combining existing tools.

XPlanet does it's job well. Global Village aims to do it's job well, and it's job is to wrap the features of Xplanet and display the output on the Gnome desktop.
